As a freelance writer, I’m always looking for ways to pad dry spells that happens to even the best of writers. I also want to retire one day from writing, so that’s another reason I’m always on the lookout for opportunities that will allow me to earn a somewhat passive income online.

So, not wanting to spend a lot of money (really I wanted to try free methods first), I went with what I knew worked. This was article marketing.

So I wrote 30 articles in 30 days and started submitting them to popular article directories like EzineArticles.com. It usually takes anywhere from 1-7 days for article directories to approve/deny an article. As I’m a frequent user of many of these directories, I’ve achieved “Premium/Platinum” status, so my articles get approved usually within 1-2 days (excluding weekends).

Once these started to hit, I started to get a lot of traffic to the affiliate site I’d set up (literally a one page site featuring the product I was promoting).

As it was a “hot” product (this is important in affiliate marketing; ie, choosing a product that many want), I started seeing sales within 48 hours.

One day while doing some research on the niche of this affiliate product, I noticed some ads on backpage by a person promoting a similar product. So, always looking for a way to boost sales. I checked out the site and started to place ads there too.

It was so easy and you could post in multiple cities without the hassle of say Craigslist or eBay Classifieds, that I quickly became addicted to the site. After I started placing ads on backpage, my sales jumped immediately.

When I first started using backpage, I’d place anywhere from 10-30 ads per day – manually. I didn’t have time to do more (remember, I’m a busy freelance writer, so the pressing demands of client projects and my own projects were always calling).

But I was happy with this.

The, one day a friend who used the site also told me about some software that could allow me to post many more ads in much less time.

Now, a lot of factors have to come together to get a day like this – so don’t go thinking that this is the norm – it’s not. But, since January 2009, I’ve earned on average of $100-$150 per day using backpage – to sell my own products and affiliate products.

A Hot Product: This is the number one thing you need. If you choose the wrong product, you’re not going to make any (or very many) sales at all – I don’t care how many ads you place.
